NATALIE

When Braun walked up to me and demanded the reason why I’d left his parents’ ranch in such a hurry, I was shocked speechless. No man other than my father has ever talked to me that way. I would have shut that down with any other man, but because I’m so attracted to him, I saw the situation differently. He was concerned for me. Driving down the mountain road at night surely must have made him nervous about my safety. Even though I’ve driven the dark roads in the Highlands hundreds of times, but he wouldn’t know that.

I needed to get away from Braun, to think about this whole situation. I have thought about him. He’s right in that, but I never thought that we were actually married after all these years.

“You okay, Natalie?” Braun asks.

“Yes, thank you. I’m fine,” I reply.

“It gets cold at night in the mountains, even in August. Are you cold? You can heat the seats,” he offers and closes my window.

I touch the button and let my window back down. “No, it feels great,” I insist.

I’m glad Braun is taking me to his place right outside of town. I don’t want to go back to the Hartgrove Ranch, and I don’t want to see Jacks right now. I need to find out all of what Braun knows about this mess we are in.

Braun reaches over the console, takes my hand in his, kisses the back of it, and says, “Natalie, you are safe with me, not because Jacks is my sister and your best friend but because I’m a true man of God. Do you trust me?”

I look over at him. It would be so easy to fall head over heels for this man, and if I don’t watch myself, I will.

“Thanks, Braun. That puts my mind at ease,” I say quietly, then turn back to look out the window.

“Answer me. Do you trust me?” he stresses.

I look over at him. His eyes are still on the road, and with all honesty, I answer, “Yes. I guess I do.”

We drive fifteen minutes outside of town, then turn down a side road. A few miles pass before we turn onto a driveway that leads to a huge, log cabin house surrounded by lines of trees on all sides like a lush, green oasis.

“Wow. This is all you?” I ask.

“Yes.” He nods toward the huge structure. “All you see here and the wooded acres surrounding this.”

“Braun, this is beautiful,” I whisper, trying not to sound too impressed, but I am.

Still holding my hand, Braun lightly tugs it, and I look over at him. “I love the way you say my name,” he tells me. He glances over at me and winks.

Not knowing what else to say, I smile but remain quiet. I turn to look out at the dark shadows of the trees. Again, I look at him, and I’m taken aback by his stark stare, like he is forming my face to memory.

“Come on, I’ll come back to get your bags.
